Portraiture

Application:
Pictures taken to reflect factual or nan-factual qualities or information on either the subject or the style in which the photographer/artist has taken the image in. Usually the picture captures the full subject but some examples are only showing part of or many objects in the picture. There are some examples of portraiture are taken in a specific way so it portrays a fake or wrong idea for example pictures of Napolean were taken with him on a box or horse to make him taller than he is. These pictures also show the idea of power from the person in the picture like a king wearing a crown. some photographers use their power of photography to take the picture at the point they like and not at the point the subject wanted, pouncing when they least expect giving a more natural appearance.

Context:
Portraiture originally were only made or taken for the people who could afford them showing their key features, for example the picture of the pope sitting on the throne looking very stern, this helped show athourity and power. Now portraiture can be found in various form for example celbrities having pictures taken to show a side that we wouldn't necessarily see or to emphase a well known feature. We use I.D. photos as an everyday day necessity to go to work and on our passports. Family portraits are found in homes these capture moments in time and have a more sentermentle value. Photographers work on this can be found in published books by them selves and also shown in gallaries.

Techniques:
photographers to this modern day, in this genre the photographer waits on the subject bieng as natural and un-posturised and then punces on that moment getting the picture of the right representation of that person, for example the picture of Picasso he posed several times until he stopped and went blank in the face and at that point the picture was taken. It is usually taken in the portariat paper layout 99 percent of the time but there are examples of the picture bieng taken in landscape. Generally the picture is taken to fit as much of the subject in but there a several pictures that ignore that guideline and ony take pictures of the shoulders up.

the picture of the lady in the old chic fasion was actually taken in 1990's by a photographer named Cindy Sherman who wanted to make it look like she was from another era. The pictures of the pope are from different artist but showing two different perspectives the one on the left shows the pope naturally showing his wealth and power whilst the one the right shows a different more demonic side to this person. The picture of the Girl was taken by Diane Arbus was taken in the way she waited for the subject to be relaxed and fully natural so that it gives a different but more natural perspective on the person that we wouldn't necesseraly have seen before.

photo-journalism

Application
Photo-journalism is used to capture a moment in time for example an explosion during the world wars and then used for publication. The idea of truth in photo-journalism originally was a trustworthy theory but as technology has evolved we have found it easier in which to edit or manipulate the final image, therefore making the image a fake or untrustworthy product.

The time period in which this was first engineered and used was during the first world war but was discovered in the 1930's by Henri Cartier Bresson. The photos taken using this type of photography can and sometime will be used to represent the whole event and can change the views of the general public for example the execution picture in vietnam completely changed the minds of the American people in which it ended the vietnamese war.

Context
the pictures taken for this particular genre of photgraphy are usually used for publishing in magazine, papers, internet and posters. television is also used as a medium for the photo-journalist world for example some news companies may ask the viewers if they have any pictures of a certain event and send them in, in which we the viewers become the photo-jounalist.

Technology;
this has greatly improved since this method began with photography evolving to the use of digital cameras but when desicive moment was discovered the leica camera was a pinacle point in which it was the first instant capture camera that was fully portable this greatly improved the chances of capturing images at that exact point than previous technology at that time. Potability greatly changed the photographic world as it made events not normally accesable for photography accessable as they didt take alot of time to take a picture or to set up it was literally just a click of the button and the picture was taken.
